Hunger Site is the original click-to-donation site created in 1999 that sponsors advertisers in return for sending users who will see their ads. The Hunger Site encourages visitors to click a button on the site, once per day, asserting that each unique click generates an "equivalent" donation of 1.1 cups of food. The Hunger Site is not a charity; This is a non-profit company that contributes revenue from its advertising banners to selected charities. Currently, this is the Millennium Promise, Food Recovery Network, Health Partners, Feeding America (formerly Harvest Second America) and Mercy Corps.

Histori

The Hunger Site was started by John Breen, a computer programmer from Bloomington, Indiana, in June 1999. Originally a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit company, the site became popular quickly. "[T] his response was soon so remarkable that he spent most of his time managing the site even if he did not receive income, loans, grants, or donations to compensate him for his time and effort or pay his expenses." Faced with increased costs, Breen sold the site to GreaterGood, "an online shopping center based in Seattle that provided a portion of its sales to charity" for an amount not disclosed in February 2000. In July 2001, following the dot-com crash , GreaterGood halted operations after losing $ 26 million in venture capital. In 2001, CharityUSA.com, LLC , a Seattle-based private nonprofit corporation, took control of the company for a million dollars. CharityUSA owns and operates various click-to-donate sites. CharityUSA currently claims that 100% of the website sponsor's ad revenue is paid to the nonprofit partner. The Report page of the Commercial Fundraiser Profile on the web page of the Secretary of State for the state of Washington calculates the percentage that CharityUSA returns to a charity client as 17% of the company's total revenue (labeled as a contribution, though the company's explanation on the same page defines this as a mix of contributions and sales product). The same explanation of operations includes how the overall operation of all GreaterGood Network sites works and reads in part:

The total amount of contributions received by CharityUSA.com, LLC from the public in fiscal year 2008 was $ 1,382,750. Of that amount, $ 1,382,750, 100% is awarded for charity. No deductions are taken from the amount given to the charity for fundraising or credit card processing fees. The other "contributions" shown above are from actual product and advertising sales. An additional $ 1,532,685 paid for charity on product and advertising sales in 2008.

In 2007, the company established 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit GreaterGood.org, and now publishes annual updates of donations from its various programs on the site. Daily updates from the "Click to Rate" program can also be found on the Hunger's website page.

In 2008, a Feeding America press release stated that "a partnership between Feeding America and The Hunger Site began in 2000 and has generated over $ 250,000 to date, translating into 4,000,000 meals available for feeding bank feeding America network nationwide. "Over the past year alone, The Hunger Site has generated nearly $ 100,000 in donations for Feeding America."

Vicki Escarra, President and CEO of Feeding America, was quoted in the same release as saying, "We at Feeding America can not be more excited about our partnership with The Hunger Site.People are living a very busy life today and The Hunger Site is the user friendly and easy way for people to donate and become involved in the fight against hunger. The increase in Internet donations over the past year illustrates the importance of making it easy for people to donate online. We hope to continue a long and successful partnership with The Hunger Site.

According to Snopes.com, "[e] sponsor ach contributed [s] an estimated cost of 1/4 cup of food to the United Nations World Food Program for every user who clicks on the site during the day." In 2005, Martin Lewis at The Guardian speculated that The Hunger Site might not make money for every click, only on clicks to sponsor sites, and those clicks might be worth 30Ã, Â ¢ each. Each click on the "starving feeding" button, he estimates 0.7Ã, Â ¢, based on the average clickthrough rate. The Hunger Site gets most of its traffic from the US.

Some websites operated by GreaterGood along with the Hunger Site were reorganized after CharityUSA.com bought GreaterGood. Child Survival Sites, Children's AIDS Sites, and Landmine Sites were renamed Children's Health Site. CharityUSA.com is then added to the GreaterGood Website Network by creating Breast Cancer Sites, Animal Rescue Sites, Rainforest Sites, and Literacy Sites.

CharityUSA.com claimed 66,235,889 cups of food donated through click-throughs in 2008.

The results presented at The Hunger Site store state that "Up to now, more than 300 million visitors have provided more than 500 million cups of staple food.Food funded by clicks on Hunger Sites is paid by site sponsors and distributed to those in need. Mercy Corps and Feeding America (formerly American's Second Harvest), 100% of the site sponsor's advertising fees are given to our charity partners, Dana is shared between these organizations and goes to hungry people in more than 74 countries, including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Middle East, South America, and North America.
