Responsive Web Widgets â€

In computing, web widgets are software widgets for the web. This is a small application with limited functionality that can be installed and executed in a web page by the user. Widgets have the role of transient apps or additional apps, meaning only occupy some web pages and do something useful with information taken from other websites and displayed on the spot. Other terms used to describe web widgets include: portlets, web components, gadgets, badges, modules, snippets, and flakes. Widgets are usually created in DHTML or Adobe Flash.

Widgets often take the form of on-screen devices such as clocks, event countdowns, auction checks, stock market checks, flight arrival information, daily weather, phone book, pictures etc.

Widgets are stand-alone apps that can be embedded to third party sites by any user on the page where they have the right to authorship, e.g. web pages, blogs, or profiles on social media sites. Widgets allow users to transform personal content into dynamic web applications that can be shared on websites where code can be installed. For example, "Weather Report Widget" can allow anyone to report today's weather by accessing data from the Weather Channel, it can even be sponsored by the Weather Channel. For website visitors to view, it should be embedded in a web page, like a Blogger blog sidebar. Even the blog section where the ad is displayed is a widget.

Widgets are also added to the Windows Operating System. They first appeared in Windows Vista. Default widgets include clock, CPU meter, picture puzzle and picture slideshow. In 2012, Microsoft recommends widget users to disable this from their PC for security reasons.

Web developers have used third-party code snippets on the page. Initial web widgets provide functions like link counters and ad banners.

Widgets can be considered as downloadable apps that look and act like traditional apps but are implemented using web technologies including JavaScript, Flash, HTML, and CSS. Widgets use and rely on web APIs exposed either by browsers or by widget engines like Akamai, Clearspring, KickApps, MassPublisher, NewsGator, or many others.

Sites like FormLoop allow users to easily create widgets from their own content without requiring any coding knowledge.

Jenis widget utama

Widgets come in different shapes and sizes, but two of the main types today are Web widgets and Desktop widgets. Web widgets are intended for use on embedding and have major implications in areas such as site performance, SEO, and even backlink campaigns. Desktop widgets are embedded in the local computer, and do not affect the performance of SEO or web pages.

For example, the Apple Desktop widget can only be added to your local (Apple) computer desktop.

Usage on social media

End users primarily use widgets to enhance their personal web experience, or web visitor experience to their personal sites.

The use of widgets has proven to be increasingly popular, where social media users can add stand-alone apps to blogs, profiles, and community pages. Widgets add utilities in the same way as iPhone apps. The widget developers often offer them as a form of sponsored content, which can pay development costs when the widget utility maps the user's needs in ways in which both parties earn. For example, sports news brands may gain awareness and increase their audience share in return for the current and dynamic use of current game scores available - blogs posting widgets Sports scores may get more sticky sites.

Control elements

One important factor with Widgets is that the host does not control the content. The content or function provided can not be modified by the host. The content has been previously published by the publisher/provider/service provider and the host may accept the content or not use the widget. The host does, however, control the placement of Widgets. Since the host can always lower the Widget, it ensures a high level of shared profit and satisfaction with performance and content.

Security considerations

Like any program code, widgets can be used for malicious purposes. One example is the Facebook "Secret Crush" widget, reported in early 2008 by Fortinet as a user lure to install Zango adware.

SEO considerations

One of the main considerations, in the use of web widgets, is how they will affect the SEO website (search engine optimization). Client-side widgets include almost anything given in JavaScript or Flash, and are by far the most common type of widget you'll see today. The content of this widget is not visible to the search engine, and therefore will not be seen as part of the content of the website. The server-side widget content is visible to search engines, but it's a bit more difficult to embed. In both cases, search bots can see embedded code for the widget itself, so some SEO issues can be reduced in this way - but website SEO should be considered every time using widgets.
