NASA TV (originally NASA Select ) is a television service of the United States government agency NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Agency). It is broadcast by satellite with simulcast over the Internet. Providers of local cable television throughout the United States and amateur television repeaters can bring NASA TVs at their own discretion, as NASA-made content is considered a work of the US government and is in the public domain. NASA TV also provides a variety of cable, satellite, and over-the-top cable services worldwide. The network was officially created in the early 1980s to provide NASA managers and engineers with real-time mission video. NASA has operated television services since the start of the space program for archival purposes, and to provide media outlets with video footage.

The network broadcasts a large number of educational programs, and provides live coverage of manned missions (including the International Space Station), robotic missions, and domestic and international launches. The network completed its conversion from analog to digital transmission at the end of 2005 after the launch of STS-114, ending the period of analog and digital dual broadcasting, although some cable television systems may still be transmitted in analogue before the transition of US digital television. NASA TV operates three channels. The "Public Channel" provides a 24-hour broadcast of live and recorded shows and documentaries aimed at the general public, as well as space and science programs for schools, museums and other educational institutions. "Media Channels" is dedicated to broadcast news organizations and other members of the press, featuring press releases, interviews, press conferences, missions and other services. The final is "NASA TV UHD", an experimental ultra-high-definition television channel created through the Space Act Agreement with Harmonic Inc., featuring content from NASA archives that take advantage of large formats, with musical audio tracks. The high-definition simulation feed of "Public Channels" was launched on July 19, 2010. The "Education Line" was discontinued in 2016, with the program being merged into the main Public Channel.

The NASA TV website also provides channels featuring live footage from inside and outside the ISS, which was established to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the station in orbit.

Programming

NASA TV carries routine, pre-recorded, 24-hour recording programs on various channels. Programs include NASA Gallery , featuring photos and videos from NASA history; Video Files , which broadcast b-roll recordings for news and media outlets; Educational File , which provides a special program for schools; This Week @ NASA , featuring news from NASA centers around the country; and NASA Edge and NASA 360 , organize programs focused on projects and activities at NASA. Live coverage of ISS and related comments aired in an hour-long segment throughout the day.

The network also provides a variety of live broadcast programs, such as ISS events (spacewalks, media interviews, educational broadcasts), press conferences, and rocket launches. This often includes running comments by members of the NASA Public Affairs Office that serves as the "voice of Mission Control", including Rob Navias, Nicole Cloutier, Dean Brandi, and formerly Josh Byerly and George Diller retired.

Previous issue with Canadian broadcasting authority

Prior to 2007, the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) banned NASA TV from being broadcast by local satellite and cable providers in Canada, with the exception of certain broadcast events. Under existing CRTC rules, cable or satellite providers must offer the minimum amount of Canadian content from Canadian domestic companies, and the only Canadian Space Agency involvement equivalent to the space mission involved with the mission of the American spacecraft at the time, together with Canadarms. In addition, the CRTC stated in September 2000 that there was not enough space left under the analog television frequency allocation plan, and the standard for dealing with foreign digital television signals was not yet completed. On April 20, 2007, the Commission issued a notice stating that upon receiving an initial request from Mount Cablevision and support from other Canadian broadcasters and community members, NASA TV was added to a list of foreign television channels available in Canada.

Broadcasting a partnership

NASA has used an external company to provide streaming services to Internet audiences, both embedded on NASA's website and through streams branded by the company. The various flow formats used vary with available technology and with the popularity of formats, including RealMedia, QuickTime, Windows Media, Flash Video, and H.264.

In July 2005, NASA signed an agreement with Yahoo! and Akamai Technologies to provide streaming services for NASA TV ahead of STS-114 missions and the relevant Return to Flight program after the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. In 2011, NASA has signed an agreement with Ustream to provide high-definition streaming of NASA TV and high-definition cameras at the International Space Station, along with a mission audio. Archives of press conferences, NASA Social events, and other events are also available via UStream. Other NASA TV programs and programs are archived through the NASA TV YouTube channel.

On August 22nd, NASA TV was awarded the national Emmy Primetime Award, Philo T. Affiliate broadcast television

  • Note: Since NASA TV is a federal government service of the United States, its program is considered in the public domain for any organization or person used because they see fit; such as the LifehacksDRTV paid programming network using NASA TV's education block to meet their FCC E/I requirements to its affiliates. Because of this, this list is unlikely to be a complete list of stations carrying NASA TV, either partly or completely as a digital sub-channel.
