Histori
Andrex was originally developed in 1942 by St Andrew Mills Ltd. paper mill, as a disposable handkerchief. Harrods department store in London sells handkerchiefs exclusively. Prior to Andrex, brands like Bronco and Izal produced tougher products. They are mainly sold through chemists and are known as "shinies".
The name Andrex comes from St. Andrew Mill, at St Andrews Road in Walthamstow, where toilet paper was first made. The concept of two-ply luxury paper has been inspired by the facial tissue used by American women, as witnessed by the man who created the name Andrex, Ronald Keith Kent. It was the first two-tier network.
St. Andrew Mills was acquired by Bower in 1955, and in 1956, Bowater formed a joint venture with Scott Paper Company, Bowater-Scott, specializing in network products including Andrex.
One of the most popular TV commercials in the UK hardly happens. The original idea in 1972 was for a girl running through a house following Andrex's scroll. Television regulators do not approve of this because they feel it encourages children to be wasteful. The Bowater-Scott Marketing Director Raymond Dinkin decided to use a Labrador puppy instead. Since then there are 130 different ads featuring the puppy.
In 1986, Bowater sold Bowater-Scott to Scott Paper, and in 1995, Kimberly-Clark bought Scott Paper.
Andrex said they marketed the first wet toilet paper in 1992.
In 2004, Andrex replaced the advertising slogan "Soft, Strong and Extremely Long", with "Tuggable, Huggable softness", and changed to "Be Kind To Your Behind" in 2008. By 2015, he used the slogan "Andrex clean" and "How does Andrex feel?"
