Plot

Intro

The film opens with Betty, a prosperous suburban housewife and a modern wizard (Deborah Harry), who is planning a dinner party. The main dish is Timmy (Matthew Lawrence), a boy he catches and chains in his kitchen. To keep him from stuffing and to bake it, the boy told three horror stories from a book he gave him, titled Tales from the Darkside .

Lot 249

In the first segment, Michael McDowell adapted the short story of Arthur Conan Doyle, "Lot No. 249". A graduate student, Edward Bellingham (played by Steve Buscemi), has been deceived by two classmates Susan (Julianne Moore) and Lee (Robert Sedgwick), who tricked him for theft to ruin his chances of winning a scholarship they compete. In retaliation, Bellingham revived the mummy and used it to kill both of them. Susan's brother, Andy (Christian Slater) kidnaps Bellingham, forces him to summon a mummy, then destroys it and burns his body and parchment. He considers killing Bellingham, but ultimately can not bring himself to do real killing. However, Bellingham took Susan and Lee back from the dead (after changing the marriage back with something similar) and sent them to Andy's dorm, where they greeted Andy who was frightened by saying that Bellingham sent greetings.

Cats from Hell

In the second story, George A. Romero adapted Stephen King's short story with the same name. Drogan is an elderly, rich-headed man (William Hickey) carrying a mercenary named Halston (David Johansen) to hire a strange one: kill a black cat, which Drogan says is very evil. Drogan explains that there are three other residents of his house before the cat arrives: his sister, Amanda (Dolores Sutton), his friend Carolyn (Alice Drummond), and the butler of the family, Richard Gage (Mark Margolis). Drogan claims that one by one, the cat kills the other three, and that he's next. Drogan's pharmaceutical company kills 5,000 cats while testing a new drug, and he believes that this black cat is here for cosmic revenge.

Halston did not believe his story, but more than willing to remove the cat because Drogan offered $ 100,000. But when Drogan returns home to see if the deed is done, he discovers that the cat has killed Halston by climbing his throat. The cat emerges from the killer's body and jumps into Drogan, giving him a fatal heart attack.

Lover Oath

The third and final segment was written by Michael McDowell and based on Yuki-onna, spirit or y? Kai in Japanese folklore or more specifically the Lafcadio Hearn version on Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things . A desperate artist named Preston (James Remar) witnessed a horrific murder committed by monsters such as gargoyles. The monster agreed to save Preston's life as long as he swore never to talk about what he saw or described the appearance of the monster to anyone. The monster disappears, leaving Preston traumatized and confused, but bound by his oath to never discuss the incident.

After that night, Preston's life changed for the better. He meets a beautiful woman named Carola (Rae Dawn Chong), and they fall in love, get married, and have two children. Preston's struggling art career was very successful, and life seemed promising, but he was tormented by the memory of his encounter with the monster, and his oath was silencing him. One night he broke and told Carola about the monster, even showing him the statue he carved. He looked annoyed and at first, Preston thought he thought he was lying. But then he let a heartbroken scream and revealed himself to be the same creature that he met that night.

With Preston's broken promise, he can no longer be a human, and their children turn into terrible forms as well. He kills Preston (though he says that he loves him), collects their children and flies away. The last scene shows that the gargoyles and children have turned to stone on the ledge of the building, staring at Preston's body with a sad expression.

Epilog

Betty states that Timmy keeps the best story ("Sumpah Belasih") for the latter, but he says that the next one is the best, and has a happy ending. He replied that it was too late because he had to start cooking it, and none of the stories in this book have a happy ending. As Betty climbs into Timmy, she tells of her own actions - throwing some marbles onto the floor that makes her slip and fall into the butcher block, stabbing herself on her own equipment. Timmy released him and pushed him into the oven. The movie ends with Timmy helping him to make a cake and break the fourth wall by saying "Do not you like a happy ending?"
