History
Beginner
Fry's was founded in 1954 by Donald Fry in northern California. With the help of his brother Charles, the chain was extended to the Phoenix market in 1960. Fry was sold in 1972 to the Dillons. (The children of Charles Fry used the proceeds to launch Fry's Electronics in 1985, it was separate from and not affiliated with the chain stores.) Dillon joined Kroger in 1983.
Fred Meyer and Kroger
On October 19, 1998, Fred Meyer, the parent company of Smith's Food and Drug, announced a strategic merger with Kroger. On May 27, 1999, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approved the merger of the two companies, The Kroger Co.
Arizona and Texas are two of 31 states where there are overlapping stores and brands of mergers. The Kroger Co., opted to operate with one brand in the market, changed the brand to Smith's Food & amp; Drug Center in Arizona as Fry's Food & amp; Drug Stores, although Smith's Food and Drug Center in Kingman, Bullhead City, and Lake Havasu City remains unchanged. The Phoenix Fry Distribution Center and offices were moved to the more modern Smith Food and Drug Distribution Center and the Offices in Tolleson suburb of Phoenix.

Fry Market
Fry's Marketplace is a multipurpose store that offers a grocery store, a pharmacy, a Ticketmaster/Ticketron (no longer available), an hour-long photo lab (no longer available), and general merchandise including outdoor residence , electronics, household goods and toys. Starting from a size of 80,000-105,000 square feet, the Marketplace store is smaller than Fred Meyer's store. Fry's Marketplace comes from the concept of Fred Meyer but on a smaller scale and has since expanded to Kroger's Columbus, Ohio Division and Smith's Food & amp; Division of the Medicines Center in Utah.
Fry's Marketplace started as the first department store in Smitty's, Arizona. Smitty is similar to Wal-Mart Supercenter and even has a food court with four choices of branded fast food (like Taco Bell). In 1996, Smitty joined Smith's Food and Drug Centers in Salt Lake City. In 1997, after the merger of Fred Meyer-Smith, Fred Meyer renewed and revitalized the Smitty concept and in January 1999, all the Smitty stores were renamed to Fred Meyer. During this time, chain management changed from Smith's Food and Drug to Fred Meyer. Construction also begins at the full-sized Fred Meyer store in Phoenix.
In June 2000, Kroger transferred Arizona Fred Meyer's store management to Fry's Food and Drug. Fred Meyer's shops were renamed Fry's Marketplace. Fred Meyer's store in Phoenix finished but never opened and then destroyed because the store was too big to use Fry.
