Hardware stores (in some countries, "stores"), sometimes known as DIY stores , sell household hardware for home improvements including: fasteners, construction materials, hand tools, power tools, locks, locks, hinges, chains, plumbing supplies, power supplies, cleaning products, household appliances, appliances, tools, paint, and lawn and garden products directly to consumers for use at home or for business. Many hardware stores have special departments unique to the region or the interests of the owner. These departments include hunting and supplies, plants and nursery products, marine and boat supplies, pet food and supplies, agricultural and livestock supplies including animal feed, swimming pool chemicals, homebrewing supplies and canning supplies. The five largest hardware retailers in the world are The Home Depot, Lowe (both from the United States), Kingfisher from England, Obi Germany, and Leroy Merlin from France.

United States

Larger hardware stores can sell a small amount of building supplies including wood, flooring, roofing materials and fences. Such shops are often referred to as home improvement centers or home centers.

There may be fewer hardware stores in the US now than a few years earlier, but according to the US Census Bureau, there are still 14,300 hardware stores in the US in 2005, employing an average of 10 employees each. Even in the face of competition from major chain stores (usually referred to as large device stores or hardware store destinations, for example, The Home Depot, Lowe and Menards), new hardware stores in the US are still open all the time.

In the US there are four major wholesale suppliers nationwide to hardware stores. The four reported more than $ 1 billion (US dollars) in sales each year. Three of them operate as a retail cooperative: Do It Best Corp, from Fort Wayne Indiana, True Value Company from Chicago Illinois and Ace Hardware from Oakbrook Illinois. Hardware store owners buy shares in these suppliers and are "members" and "owners" as well as customers. The hardware store can choose to enter the name of the cooperative in the name of the advertised store.

The fourth national supplier is Orgill, Inc., a traditional wholesale organization that does not operate as a cooperative.

Hardware stores also buy from a variety of regional wholesalers and specialty manufacturers. Regional wholesalers in the American Distribution co-operatives are Blish-Mize, Emery-Waterhouse, Florida Hardware, Handy Hardware, HDW, Inc., Jensen Distribution Services, Monroe Hardware, and United Hardware. Other reseller cooperatives are the PRO Group and Val-Test Distributors. Manufacturers include Black & amp; Decker, Ingersoll Rand, Masco, Rubbermaid and Weber.

Some hardware stores operate the rental business as part of the main business, and rent out for general-use construction tools and/or party supplies. The main hardware cooperative provides brand name and support for hardware store owners including Rental Only, Party Center, Grand Rental Station and Taylor Rental, all of which are trademarks owned by True Value Company.

Elwood Adams Hardware from Worcester, Massachusetts claims to be the oldest hardware store operating in the United States, having started business in 1782.

Unique service in hardware store

Part of the popularity of American hardware stores is the variety of services they provide. Most retail outlets only sell goods, while some hardware stores make or fix a wide variety of household items. It is common for hardware stores in the US to repair damaged windows and screens, repair electrical appliances such as lawn mowers, lock key locks, make copies of house keys and car keys, reassemble lights and vacuum cleaners, sharpen knives and cutting tools , making minor improvements on the faucets and showers, repairing kerosene heaters and cutting and installing pipes for sketching.

Hardware industry trade association

The North American Retail Hardware Association (NRHA) is a membership organization that provides training and resources for hardware store owners and publishes trade magazines in print and online.

China

Most hardware stores in China, both in cities and in rural areas, are small, family-owned, non-franchised. They provide similar products to Western hardware stores, including pipelines and power supplies, appliances, and some household appliances. Unlike the West, they usually do not carry wood, fish stocks, gardening products, or boating equipment. Some rural hardware stores provide livestock feed, such as chicken feed.

Common to most non-Western countries, China has a dedicated hardware store, dedicated to selling products in certain categories. These stores are usually grouped together in a district, often together with groups of other specialty hardware stores, which are also grouped together. Examples are store groups that specialize in:

  • Chains, carrying various sizes of chains, couplings, hook lifts, cutters, etc.
  • Generators and compressors, parts sales, hoses, plus products and equipment related to maintenance and repair of generators and compressors.
  • Tubes and metal rods, carrying products of various sizes and materials.
  • Large power tools, with accessories.
  • Electrical wires and wire ropes, also sell electrical switches, fuse boxes, and wire rope sockets, clamps, and thimbles.

Destination hardware storage

Since the acquisition of Bunnings by Wesfarmers in 1994, the concept of a big-box store has changed the way new hardware stores are built. In 2004, Miter 10 built the first 10 "MEGA" Miter supercentre with an average store size of 13,500 m 2 . It was then closed or converted into a large Miter-concept store 10. In 2011 Masters Home Improvement entered the market and has since opened more than 49 stores, with an average of 13,500 m 2 footprints. Master Home Improvement, which is Australia's second largest hardware chain, closed in December 2016.
