In a multifunctional or all-in-one printer, fax machines, copiers and scanners, automatic document feeder or ADF are features that take several pages and feed a single page paper on a time to the scanner or copier, allowing users to scan, and thus copy, print, or fax, multi-page documents without having to manually replace each page.
Most photocopiers allow scanning on flatbeds or plates ("glass") or through document feeders. Most fax machines have ADF, allowing unattended multi-page fax transmission. Because everywhere ADF is on a fax machine, some fax machine owners use a fax machine as a scanner, fax a multi-page document for themselves. The document feeder is explained by speed, in pages per minute or ppm, and capacity, usually in the range from 10 sheets up to 200.
There are two types of document feeders that can perform two-sided (duplex) scans: a automatic document feeder invert or RADF scan one side of the page, then flip and scan the other side. automatic duplex document leakage or DADF scan both sides in a single pass. The advantage of DADF is the faster speed for two-sided original documents. RADF and DADFs are scored in figures per minute (HDI), the number of sides they can scan every minute; this may depend on the resolution used (rather than the maximum supported resolution).
