Shock chlorination is a process used in many pools, wells, springs, and other water sources to reduce residual bacteria and algae in the water. Chlorination of shock is done by mixing large amounts of sodium hypochlorite, which can be in the form of powders or liquids such as chlorine bleach, into water. The general suggestion is that the added amount should increase the chlorine level to 10X levels (in parts per million) of chloramines present in the pond water-this is "surprising". The lower ratio is superchlorination. Water that is being feared should not enter or drink until the amount of sodium hypochlorite in water drops to three ppm or less. Commercial sodium hypochlorite should not be mixed with commercial calcium hypochlorite, because there is a risk of explosion. Although the verb for superchlorination , "shock" is often misunderstood (through marketing and sales languages) to be a unique type of product.

While the "surprising" pool to reduce the buildup of chloramines works with inorganic chloramines, ammonia-based, in two studies was found to be ineffective with organic chloramines present in all aquatic pools for example. with creatinine, an organic component in human sweat. Indeed, superchlorination produces free chlorine that reacts with organic contaminants to form various disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that are harmful to the health of swimmers for example. one of the worst DBP is the dangerous trichloramine (NCl 3 ), famous for obnoxious eye swimming nearby. It has been shown that ozone is an excellent alternative, a much more effective oxidizer than chlorine shock.
