In the United States, chickenhawk or hawk chicken is an unofficial title for three species of North American eagles in the Accipitridae family: Cooper hawks, also called quail eagles , sharp-shinned eagles, and red-tailed eagles. The term "chicken hawk", however, is not accurate. Although Cooper and sharp hawks may attack other birds, chickens do not become an important part of their diet; Red tailed hawks have a variety of foods, but may be opportunistic hunting for domestic poultry.
Historically, a misinterpretation on behalf of the "hawk" has labeled these birds as pests, thus justifying their massacre. Officially, according to a list of American Ornithological bird names, the term has become obsolete as it is applied to birds, but still enjoys widespread daily use in rural areas where one of the three species has been seen as a threat to small outdoor animals which are kept as pets or livestock, especially chickens.
Although this term is still widely used by those who maintain such animals, it is too ambiguous to be of any scientific use, especially since the meaning of the eagle differs between America and Europe; thus, the term (or lack thereof) is completely dependent on the context.
Unofficial names of other raptors derived from their prey should include: eagle ducks (eagle eagles), sparrowhawk (American kestrel), goshawk (northern goshawk), hawk pigeons (merlin), hawk (osprey) fish, and eagles quail (Eagles Cooper).

- Henery Hawk is a cartoon character created by Chuck Jones and Robert McKimson in the series Looney Tunes . The premise of this character is that he is too young to know what a chicken is and therefore, though it has a lot of energy, is easily tricked into thinking that other animals (usually Barnyard Dawg or Sylvester) are chickens. The Foghorn Leghorn character was introduced to complement the character of Henery Hawk, but quickly derailed it in popularity. He, along with the rest of Looney Tunes players, is back in the latest Looney Tunes lottery, a sitcom named The Looney Tunes Show .
- Jim Henson's Animal Show featuring Armstrong the Chickenhawk (played by Bill Barretta) who is a bird performaner.
- Animated TV show Ben 10: Omniverse featuring an alien named Kickin Hawk.
