History

The company was founded by Rudie and Peter Sypkes in 1990, and continues to grow to become the only retail chain of discount stores in Tasmania, and Rudie and Peter Sypkes continued running Chickenfeed until 2001, when retail chains were sold to Australia's Discount Retail Group.

In 2009, Australian millionaire Jan Cameron purchased the parent company, Australian Discount Retail and changed its holdings to Retail Adventures Pty Ltd. Following a change of ownership, it was announced that all Go-Lo, Crazy Clark and Sam's Warehouse stores will be re-branded Chickenfeed through the next five years. Soon after it was announced that nine new Chickenfeed stores would open in Victoria to test the mainland market. The latter was opened in August, and nearly 20 stores finally opened on the mainland.

The store closure begins in October 2012 with up to 20 Chickenfeed stores in Tasmania closed or closures announced without explanation, including Launceston stores that were forced to be reclaimed by the company's security guards who own the complex located in, after the company did not pay the rent, as well as similar situations in his shop at Centrepoint Shopping Center, Hobart.

On October 27, 2012, the parent company of Retail Adventure is placed in administration. Owner Jan Cameron continues to operate profitable stores under license from the administrators. Rename Chickenfeed has stopped, with the Chickenfeed brand disappearing altogether. Any remaining and profitable stores after restructuring were changed into "Crazy Clark's" or "Sam's Warehouse".

During the administrative period, the attention has been expressed by the company's staff that one of the main reasons behind the change and closing of the store is ultimately due to the high rent imposed on the shop by the landlord, the Sypkes family. The Sypkes family holds a 50% stake in the Shiploads discount chain, and a number of discount Shiploads stores have been opened in locations previously owned by Chickenfeed stores.

All stores are closed on May 20, 2013, excluding the South Tasmania Control Center being renamed to Sam's Warehouse in mid-October 2013.
