AJENTS (sometimes known as ATS - "Agent Ticket System") is one of two original computer-based railway ticketing system supplied to travel agencies in the UK. This allows agencies that are not connected to any of the major Global Distribution System (GDS) networks to publish and print train tickets from standard personal computers, and safely submit revenue and accounting data to the Resettlement Plan to be allocated to the appropriate Corporate Train Operations.

Detail sistem

In contrast to ELGAR, which is fully integrated with all four major GDS systems and provides a complete system of ticketing, ordering, printing and accounting and interfaces, AJENTS is a stand-alone spending mechanism, supported by a single software application, requiring only a PC with a dot printer -matrix and special thin card ticket stock.

After its introduction in the mid-1990s, PC system requirements for AJENTS were relatively low: [1]

  • Microsoft Windows 95, 98, or NT 4.0
  • Processor speed: 300MHz
  • RAM: 32MB
  • Hard drive capacity: 1GB
  • Modem: 56 kbit/d
  • The dot matrix printer: Epson's 24-pin unit is compatible with at least 80-column carriage width. The Epson LQ-300 and LQ-570 printers have been identified by ATOC as ideal.

The software works by placing a ticket image on the computer monitor, so that each text field can be filled through the keyboard before printing. Color monitors of reasonable size (at least 15 ") are also recommended, such as CD-Rom drives (for software and updates information).

Ticket stock

Fan folds, some pre-printed tickets are manufactured on hollow thin cards, for use in dot matrix printers. It has a tractor hole on a removable hollow strip on both sides. On British Rail days, the reference form of the stock is BR 4403/44 ; due to privatization, slightly different layouts have been used with the code RSP 4404/46 . The code is printed near the bottom left corner of the front of the ticket.

Relationships with other systems

AJENTS works with ISTEL reservation booking system [2] and RAILPLANNER travel planning software. [3] There is no direct connection to the Central Reservation System (CRS) for reservation reservation seats, or to Rail Journey Information Service (RJIS), developed for the rail industry in 1998 as a centralized standardized data center for all information related to travel planning and reservations: schedules, tariff tables, valid routes, authorization cards and the like. [4] This means that, in many cases, variables such as valid tariffs and routes must be manually checked at the time the ticket is booked, usually by using manual and printed manuals. (AJENTS does have a simple database of "Top 50" rates for the most popular combinations of places of origin and destination).

There is an on-site system for sales and income data to be sent automatically to Rail Settlement Plan Ltd, via a secure e-mail address.

The future

ATOC currently provides AJENTS system for travel agents directly. However, as part of a strategic move away from direct provisioning that supports "open markets" where advertising agencies get their preferred systems directly from suppliers, AJENTS will no longer be provided or endorsed (by ATOC or third parties) after December 31, 2007. Suppliers has already developed a "New Generation" system with full integration into CRS and RJIS (mainly Travelport UK Rail and Evolvi systems), and ATOC works with them to help get into the market.
