The surface foot per minute ( SFPM or SFM ) is a combination of physical quantity ( surface velocity ) and imperial custom units and America ( feet per minute ). This is defined as the number of linear feet that the location on the rotating component runs in a minute. The most common use is in measurement of cutting speed (surface velocity) in machining. This is a unit of speed that describes how fast the cutting edge of the cutting tool goes. This correlates directly with the machinability of the workpiece material and the hardness of the cutting tool material. This corresponds to the speed of the spindle through variables such as the diameter of the cutter (for rotating cutters) or the diameter of the workpiece (for lathe work).
SFM is a combination of diameter and velocity (RPM) of the material measured in feet per minute as a shaft of a milling machine or lathe. 1 SFM equal to 0.00508 m/s (meters per second, SI unit speed). The faster the spindle changes, and/or the larger the diameter, the higher the SFM. The goal is to employ the tools to run the SFM as high as possible to increase hourly production. However some material will run better on certain SFM. When SFM is known for certain materials (ex 303 annealed stainless steel = 120 SFM for high speed steel tooling ), the formula can be used to determine the spindle speed for the life tool or the speed of the spindle to change the material.
In the milling machine, the diameter tool is replaced by the diameter stock in the following formula when the cutter is spinning and the stock is stationary.
