Plot

When Mina (Alba Rohrwacher) and Jude (Adam Driver) first met, it was under the worst conditions; Mina finds herself accidentally stuck in the bathroom with Jude, who suffers from diarrhea due to food poisoning. Despite this awkward first encounter, the two formed a seemingly powerful relationship. However, when Mina announces that she will return to Italy, Jude starts a sexual encounter that ends with her ejaculating inside her, though Mina specifically asks otherwise. Mina became pregnant as a result of the encounter, which later tied her up with Jude and prevented her traveling to Italy. Pregnancy eventually puts a great deal of tension on their relationships because Mina is obsessed with purity and deeply distrustful of modern medicine. While Jude wants him to visit an obstetrician, he decides to trust Mina's decision to rely more on traditional and alternative medicine, even to go to a meeting with a psychic, stating the fetus of Indigo's child. Mina does not eat well during pregnancy, which causes the amniotic fluid to dry out. When she gave birth, she tried a water birth with a midwife, but after hours, the baby was depressed and Jude took her to the hospital against her wishes, where she had a cesarean section. Once the baby is born, Mina begins putting the baby on a vegan diet, which concerns Jude, who began secretly opposing Mina's upbringing techniques. This puts the two parents at odds with each other and Mina begins to be more obsessed about keeping the child pure, at one point feeding the child the anti-nutritional oil because Jude feeds the boy's meat. As things grow, the relationship continues toward a spiral that lowers the welfare and risk of a child's life.

Toward the end of the film, Jude takes the child away from the couple's home and takes it to his mother, where he feeds her. Mina comes and tries to slip away with the boy, only for Jude to stop him. As a result, Mia throws herself facing forward to the door, causing injury. She used a bruise on her face to convince the police that Jude hit her, and took the baby home with her. She gladly spent the day with her son on the beach. However, when he returns home and puts the baby to sleep, an invisible person enters the apartment. Mina sat on the bed and saw the man entering the bedroom. The screen then cuts into black as a shoot ring out. Jude is next seen running into the police station, frantically asking where his son is. The baby was not hurt, but Jude was crying. Apparently Jude's mother shot and killed Mina because she admits that Mina is dangerous to her grandchildren, and that Mina will eventually starve the baby if she lives. In his prison cell, he expresses remorse for his actions, but does not regret protecting his grandson and rescuing him from his mother. The movie ends with Jude and his son still playing at the beach.
