Hotel St. George , once the largest hotel in New York City, is located in the heart of the beautiful Brooklyn Heights Historic District (1965), the first designated neighborhood of New York City. Its constituent buildings largely survive and were built between 1885 and 1929. This historic building is now used as student housing for nearby colleges like NYU, Pace, New York Law School and The New York Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts. It houses more than 1,400 students, and the occupancy will increase with the building being constantly updated and improved. The building is open only to students, has two pool tables, and one common kitchen to share with residents. Attached to the building is a separate four-storey "Eastern Athletic" gym.

Its location is just one stop away from Manhattan, above Clark Street subway station (train 2 and 3 ) on IRT Broadway - Seventh Avenue Line. The only subway subway station continues to function inside the hotel itself, just before the main door leads to the former ballroom and check-in guests.

History and description

The St. George is a collection of surviving buildings built mainly from 1885 to 1929; St. George occupied the full city block bordered by Clark Street, Pineapple Street, Hicks Street, and Henry Street. It has attracted celebrities, athletes, and every presidential candidate flocking to many ballrooms (Colorama Ballroom being the largest banquet room in the world) and the largest indoor saltwater pool in the United States. From 1975-1976, several political prisoners, exiled from Chile by dictator Augusto Pinochet, stayed at the St. George. The last remaining part of the hotel that operates like it was burned in a fire in August 1995. although the signboard remains fixed for historical purposes.

The entrance to 100 Henry Street, also known as the "Weller Wing" of St. George and formerly the hotel's main entrance, now part of Educational Housing Services (EHS), which provides boarding services for NYC university students. This same entrance also allows access to EHS's "Wing Studio". In 2005, EHS expanded the St. George and opened a new wing of the building at 55 Clark Street known as Clark Residence built on the site of a hotel building destroyed by a fire in 1995. EHS has 1,200 domestic and international students. Stylish street-level shops, restaurants and neighborhood shops occupy the front area at Clark and Henry.
