What do I do if my baby cries at night? - Tesco Baby Club
src: www.tesco-baby.com

Babies crying is a baby's cry in response to internal or external stimuli. Babies cry as a form of basic instinctive communication. Basically, the newborn undergoes a transition from life in the womb to the external environment. Up to 27% of parents describe problems with crying babies in the first four months. Up to 38% identify problems with their baby crying within the first year. Parents can worry about how long the baby cries, how the baby can be entertained, and the sleep patterns are disturbed. Colic is used as a synonym for excessive crying, although colic may not be the cause of excessive crying.

Physiology

Crying can cause Valsalva reflex. These reflexes have a negative impact on the pressure of sucking and resulting in poor food. The level of cortisol increases with blood pressure. Increased blood pressure will have an effect on cerebral blood flow, velocity of cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure. Increased pressure and velocity can cause intracranial hemorrhage. Prolonged inhalation may also cause some side effects. Clogged venous returns and rapid inhalation of inspiration may occur. Foramen ovale shunting can occur. Adults can often determine whether a baby's cry indicates anger or pain. Most parents also have a better ability to distinguish their own baby's cries than different children. Babies imitate the contours of their parents' tones. French babies wailed in rising tones while German babies liked melodic falls. Overstimulation may be a contributing factor to baby crying and that an active period of crying may serve the purpose of excessive stimulation spending and help the baby's nervous system regain homeostasis.

Misconceptions

Misconceptions about the purpose of crying in infants are common among nurses and medical personnel. This is usually determined by cultural customs and not by evidence-based explanations. Baby crying is considered by some as normal and good. The belief that babies need to cry to develop or train their lungs is not supported by research. This is because the lungs of healthy newborns are able to withstand a sufficient amount of air plus reserves. Birth trauma is related to the amount of crying. Mothers who have experienced obstetric interventions or who were made to feel helpless during birth have babies crying more than other babies. Babies who experience birth complications have a longer cry spell at the age of three months and wake up more often at night crying. When a baby cries for no apparent reason after all other causes (such as hunger or pain) do not apply, crying can signal a useful stress release mechanism, not all sources agree with this. The "crying in the arm" approach is a way of entertaining these babies. Another way to calm and soothe a baby is by imitating the familiarity of the mother's uterus. The consistency and accuracy of the mother's response is associated with reduced frequency and the duration of crying by the end of the first year. Differences in individual crying reflect the history of maternal responses rather than constitutional differences in infant irritability. Cause

Although colic is often considered a cause of excessive crying in infants, others:

Colic

The term 'colic' was defined in 1954 as: "weeping for more than three hours per day, for more than three days per week, and for over three weeks in well-fed and healthy infants." Colic and excessive crying by infants identical with some doctors. Colic is associated with gastrointestinal discomforts such as intestinal cramps. Doctors often recognize that colic can not be treated or alternative treatments are ineffective. The protocol followed by doctors to treat colic is described as "treating parents" on bail.

Maternal response

Crying in infants is associated with high levels of stress and depression in the mother. Excessive crying has also been linked to "mother's physical aggression" and "angry talk". The burden of mother care, ie, the mother without assistance in caring for the baby, is more susceptible to physical aggression and angry speech. During the evaluation of the maternal depression response to baby crying, sleep problems are closely related to excessive crying and may obscure the conclusions of the study. Also, it is not always clear that when sleep problems are associated with baby crying, whether sleep problems are descriptive of the mother or baby or both. Mother stress is associated with excessive crying.

Effects on small children

One of the definitions used to study excessive crying in infants is to cry for three hours or more every 24 hours. Excessive crying is associated with a doubling in risk of overall problems, problem behavior, hyperactivity, and mood problems at 5-6 years of age. Excessive cries of babies double the risk of behavior, hyperactivity, and mood problems by age 5-6, as reported by their mothers. Excessive crying is not the only factor in childhood difficulty later on. Behavioral problems in childhood include so-called regulatory issues, such as excessive crying, sleep, and eating problems, which occur in 20% of infants in multiproblem families. The problem of crying, whining and excessive sleep at 4-6 months is associated with a decline in social development at 12 months.

Several factors can contribute, and some explain, the relationship between excessive crying and then behavioral and emotional problems. During the early years, mother-child quality can be considered as an important means of healthy mental development of a child. Both reciprocal mom and dad during infancy are predictions of lower social competence and aggression in preschoolers.

Compared to other babies, excessive crying babies have slightly lower birthweight and slightly younger gestational age. Overweight babies more often have single, low-educated, non-industrialized mothers, who report more depression, higher infant care burden, and more aggressive behavior and have authoritarian parenting styles. Excessive crying is associated with a higher risk for hyperactivity/inattention, emotional symptoms, behavioral problems, peer relationships, and overall behavioral problems at ages 5-6, as well as a higher risk for decreased pro-social behavior as reported by mother. Excessive crying is also associated with mood problems as well as generalized anxiety problems at 5-6 years of age.

Abuse

Normal cries

Physical abuse of the baby is associated with crying. Crying may be linked to a rough head trauma in infants. This is the most common cause of child death. Dad often becomes the one who shakes the baby. Shaking can occur many times. This vibration can cause serious injury in almost 50% of the time. Some caregivers do not realize that shaking the baby can be very dangerous or kill the baby. This type of abuse is being handled by efforts to educate parents and caregivers with leaflets and educational videos.

Prevention and treatment

Baby crying is worse in the first few months of life, but increases as the child grows. A baby can sometimes calm down with a gentle rocking, offering a pacifier, singing or soft talk, taking a walk with a stroller, or driving in the car. If the baby does not stop crying, it can get sick and be seen by the doctor. Frustration and stress can be very heavy for those who have a crying baby. If caregivers feel as if they are losing control, there are precautions to take. Caregivers can benefit by calling friends, relatives, neighbors, or parents to get support. Another suggestion is to put the baby in a safe place and walk away. Infants can be checked every 5 to 10 minutes. Babies may be in danger if someone is easily irritated or has a temper or history of caring violence or seeing a baby.

When "normal" causes of excessive crying is ruled out, some caregivers adopt alternative and complementary treatments for excessive crying. These practices include:

  • Eliminate dairy products, eggs, wheat, and nuts from a breastfeeding mother's diet
  • Breast-feeding infant formula; not proven to be beneficial to most babies
  • Parental counseling on certain colic management techniques; not proven effective for most babies
  • Baby massage; not proven effective or recommended

Those who realize that the baby can be in a situation where abuse is a possibility, support can be offered to give the parent or caregiver a break when needed. Education and understanding can make parents know that dealing with a crying baby can be very frustrating - especially when they are tired or stressed, but a baby's crying is normal and will pass. Parents can be encouraged to rest for a moment if necessary when the baby is safe in the crib. Others can be sensitive and supportive in situations where parents try to calm a crying baby.
