War of the Roses is a 1989 American black comedy film based on the 1981 novel by the same name by Warren Adler. The film follows a rich couple with a seemingly perfect marriage. When their marriage began to fall apart, property became the centerpiece of a shameful and bitter divorce fight.

This is the third movie starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny DeVito, after Romancing the Stone and its sequel The Jewel of the Nile. DeVito directs the movie, which also has producer James L. Brooks and actor Dan Castellaneta working on projects outside The Simpsons. The opening sequence sequence was created by Saul Bass.

In both the novel and the film, the couple's married name is Rose, and the title is a reference to the battle between York House and Lancaster during the Late Middle Ages.

Plot

Lawyer Gavin d'Amato is in his office discussing a divorce case with a quiet client. Realizing his determination to divorce his wife, Gavin decides to tell the story of one of his clients, a personal friend.

Eighteen years earlier, Oliver Rose, a student at Harvard Law School, met Barbara at an auction on Nantucket, where they offered the same antiques. Oliver chatted with Barbara and they became friends. When Barbara misses her ferry home, the two end up spending the night together. Eventually they both married and had two children and settled in Washington DC. For years, Roses grew richer, and Barbara found an old house whose owner had just died, and bought it. However, cracks seem to form in families, like children who are overweight because Barbara spoils them with a snack. When Oliver became a successful partner at his law firm, Barbara, who was his loving and loving wife at the beginning of the marriage, seemed to be anxious in her life with Oliver, and began to dislike her very much.

Oliver, for his part, could not understand what he had done to disgust Barbara, regardless of his controlling, selfish, indifferent and generally dismissive attitude. When Oliver believes that he suffered a heart attack the day after the fight, Barbara showed no remorse or concern for her health, and finally admitted that she no longer loves her and wants to divorce. Oliver accepts, but tension arises between the two during a meeting with Barbara's lawyer when Barbara explains that she wants the house and everything in it, even using Oliver's last love note to him (which she has written in hospital) as an influence on her in their legal battle. Wise not to represent himself, Oliver hired Gavin as his legal counsel. Barbara initially throws Oliver out of the house, but she moves back after finding a legal loophole that allows her to stay while the result of her divorce is delayed. As a result, Barbara immediately began planning to get rid of Oliver herself, even trying as far as possible to tempt Gavin to side with her.

In an effort to compromise, Oliver offered his wife a large sum of money instead of the house, but Barbara still refused to stay. Realizing that his client was in an unfortunate situation, Gavin advised Oliver to end the conflict by leaving Barbara with home and starting a new life for himself. Oliver responded by dismissing Gavin and decided to take his own action.

At this point, Oliver and Barbara start spitting and insulting each other in every way, even in front of friends and potential business clients. Both began to destroy the furniture of the house; stoves, furniture, ornaments Staffordshire, and tableware. In addition, Oliver accidentally hit a Barbara cat in the driveway. When Barbara finds out, she retaliates by trapping Oliver in her private sauna, where she almost gives up on heatstroke and dehydration.

While the children went to college, Oliver finally calmed down and tried to make peace with Barbara during an elegant dinner, but eventually reached the point of rest when Barbara served her patÃÆ'Â © he meant made of his dog (which turned out to be a bluff). Oliver physically attacked Barbara, who escaped to the attic. Oliver climbed into the house to prevent Barbara from escaping, while Barbara loosened the chandelier to drop on Oliver. When the German housekeeper, Susan, gave them an unexpected visit at night, she sensed something was wrong and secretly contacted Gavin for help. By the time Gavin arrives, Oliver and Barbara's fight has reached its peak in two dangerous hanging from an unsafe chandelier. During this time, Oliver admitted to Barbara that despite their predicament, she always loved him, but Barbara did not respond. Before Gavin can go inside with the ladder, the chandelier support cord fails, leaving only the power cord to the fuse box that supports the pair and the chandelier. Despite Oliver's belief that each wire can hold 'at least two hundred pounds', the wire eventually fails too, sending Oliver, Barbara, and the chandelier crashing loudly to the floor. In his last breath, Oliver reached out to touch Barbara's shoulder, but Barbara used her last strength to drop her hand, firmly affirming her feelings to her even in death.

Finishing his story, Gavin presents his client with two choices: either continuing with divorce and facing horrible bloodshed in court, or going home to his wife to settle their differences correctly. The client chooses the latter, and Gavin, satisfied, packs up his office to go home to his own family.

Cultural impact

In German-speaking areas, since the movie was released, the word Rosenkrieg (meaning "Roses war," or less literally, "War of the Roses") has been a sign of a fierce battle for property, portrayed in the film (and often also for custody of children) with most speakers completely unaware of the origin of the word.
