Histori

In 1991, areas in the East End, high school in Austin and Milby High School, were among the largest registrations in Texas. In December of that year, school district guardians decided to build a new secondary school in September 1995, not 1997 because of the severity of the density. In 1997 a new secondary school had not yet been built; local community leaders and parents anticipate the construction of ChÃÆ'¡vez as Austin and Milby are still crowded.

In the fall of 2000, ChÃÆ'¡vez opened and took up most of Milby's traditional neighborhood. In turn, Milby absorbs some students from Austin.

A group called Environmental Racism Unidos Contra (UCER) protested school closeness with many chemical plants as soon as it opened; schools less than 0.25 miles (0.40 km) from plants owned by Texas Petroleum, Denka Chemical, USS Chemical, and Goodyear Chemical. Juan Parras, leader of the UCER group, stated that schools will bear the burden of chemical leaks. Heather Browne, a spokeswoman for Houston ISD, stated that the Chavez site was tested for environmental hazards in the air and soil in 1992 and 1996; no problems found in the test. Browne also stated that one park, three public pools, Town Hall in South Houston, and a golf course are 2 miles from Chavez.

In 2007, an Associated Press/Johns Hopkins University study refers to ChÃÆ'¡vez as a "dropout factory" in which at least 40% of the incoming student classes are not up to their senior year. During that year 21% of middle school children who were dizonasikan to ChÃÆ'¡vez chose to attend different ISD Houston schools.

In 2014 Terry Grier stated that ChÃÆ'¡vez should reduce its enrollment to about 3,000 students.
