The Australian Breeding Association ( ABA ) is an Australian organization interested in breastfeeding and breastfeeding breastfeeding. ABA members include nursing mothers and their partners as well as health professionals such as doctors, lactation consultants and midwives.

ABA was founded in Melbourne, Victoria in 1964 as the Nursing Mothers' Association , with the aim of providing mother-to-mother support to lactating women. It is the leading source of breastfeeding information and support in Australia.

The association is supported by health authorities and specialists in infant and child health and nutrition, including an advisory panel of honor.

Histori

Mary Paton founded Mother Care Association with five other mothers in Melbourne after having difficulty breastfeeding her first child. There is a lack of support and accurate information about breastfeeding. Doctors and nurses at the time were not trained to deal with breastfeeding problems and with the modern nuclear family there were some older women to seek advice, so the founding members supported each other, thus creating models for mother-to-mother support rather than continuing today. Other founders are Glenise Francis, Pat Patterson, Jan Barry (a member of the Coles family), Pauline Pick and Sue Woods.

The first meeting was held in Melbourne at Mary Paton's home on February 13, 1964 and the first bulletin was published later that year. Originally based primarily in Victoria, the ABA gradually spread to other states and territories with state representatives for the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia designated in 1969, the national headquarters established at Hawthorn, Victoria in 1970, and a group established in South Australia and Tasmania in 1971. ABA had more than 10,000 members in 1973.

In 2001, the NMAA changed its name to the Australian Breastfeeding Association. By 2016, more than 350,000 people have become members.

Services

ABA has groups across Australia that hold discussion meetings for mothers. Breastfeeding education seminars run for prospective parents; community education continues through all levels of education from pre-school to college and members visiting mothers in hospitals to introduce their associations and services. ABA organizes seminars and conferences for health professionals. ABA is a Registered Training Organization and provides training in breastfeeding counseling and community education. On March 20, 2009, a national breastfeeding aid channel was launched to improve previous state-level aid channels. The helpline is staffed by volunteers who have completed ABA training.

In 2015 the ABA launches the Breastfeeding Environ- ment program to provide support to returning mothers.

Health apps

In Australia, during January 2014, technology startup at Melbourne Small World Social collaborated with the Australian ASI Association to create the first Google Glass breastfeeding application for new mothers. The app, named Google Glass Breastfeeding app trial, allows mothers to breastfeed their babies when they see instructions on common breastfeeding problems (sticking, postures etc.) or contact a lactation consultant through a secure Google Hangout who can see the problem through Google Glass Camera. The trial was successfully concluded in Melbourne in April 2014, and 100% of participants were breastfeeding with confidence. Small World Social Breasfteeding Support Project

Controversy

A Sunday Mail report in August 2012 reported that during the Australian Breeds Association class, undercover reporters were told the baby died "every 30 seconds" of the formula and "Formula is a bit like AIDS,". The association launched an internal investigation shortly thereafter and in a media statement on August 29, 2012 said "comments reported in the media are not the views of associates and the counselors involved have quit all tasks".
