Landmark is an unidentified community recognized as a local urban district in Manitoba province, Canada, located about 30 km southeast of the provincial capital Winnipeg in Rural TachÃÆ'Â ©. The population of Landmark at the 2011 census was 1.326. The landmarks serve as a dormitory or outcast community for those who work in Winnipeg but prefer to live in smaller communities.

Landmark businesses, for years, highlight that the community is located in Canada's longitudinal center.

The landmarks are located in areas with rich black soils that are known to produce nice plants. Located in lowland areas, communities rely on drainage provided by the Seine River built to minimize floods caused by spring melting.

History

Although there were at least four homesteads established around 1907, most of the area was barren until just after World War I. It was at this time that a number of families living in the surrounding area faced a shortage of land for agricultural expansion. In 1920, a dozen Mennonite families had bought land in the area and started building their new farm. Within a year, the area had its first church building, and by 1925 a school district had been organized.

The main line of transportation in the Landmark area in the early years was the Old Dawson Trail, a dirt road that led west to Winnipeg and east to Ste. Anne.

In about 1920, the eastern part of the Prairie Rose area was registered as the name "Landmark", randomly selected from the list of names in "Farmer Advocates" by the early inhabitants of Peter M. Penner and his eldest son.

Many businesses sprang up in Landmarks in the 1950s. One of the first businesses in the Landmark area, a workshop named Landmark Motors, opened in 1950, followed the following year by the Landmark General Store. The largest business Landmark, a supplier of poultry and poultry feeds called Landmark Feeds Inc., was established in 1954. In 1957, a pipe and heating business was opened, followed a year later by a second repair workshop, Lincoln Sales & amp; Service (now Giesbrecht Mechanical).

Mennonite descendants continue to form the largest identified group in the Landmark, although immigration to the area has changed the demographics in recent years.
