The Ferber , or Ferberization method, is a technique invented by Dr. Richard Ferber to solve baby sleep problems. This involves children who "train babies" to calm down by allowing the child to cry for a predetermined amount of time before receiving external comfort.

The "Cry It Out" (CIO) approach can be traced back to "The Care and Feeding of Children" written by Dr. Emmett Holt in 1895. CIOs are a method of sleep training that allows babies to cry for a given thing. period before the parents will offer convenience. "Ferberization" is one such approach. Ferber does not recommend to let the baby cry. More extreme methods, such as the method of the extinction of Dr Marc Weissbluth, are often mistakenly referred to as "Ferberization", although they are beyond the guidelines recommended by Ferber. However, some pediatricians feel that any form of CIO is unnecessary and damaging the baby.

Dr. Richard Ferber discusses and outlines various practices to teach baby to sleep. The term ferberization is now popularly used to refer to the following techniques:
- Take steps to prepare your baby for sleep. This includes night rituals and daytime activities.
- When sleeping, leave the child in bed and leave the room.
- Revert at increasing intervals to entertain the baby (without lifting it). For example, on the first night, some scenarios ask for the first return after three minutes, then after five minutes, and after that every ten minutes, until the baby falls asleep.
- Every subsequent night, returning at intervals longer than the previous night. For example, the second night may ask to return first after five minutes, then after ten minutes, and after that every twelve minutes, until the baby falls asleep.
This technique is targeted at infants as young as four months old. Some babies are able to sleep through the night at three months, and most are able to sleep through the night at six months. Before the age of six months, the baby may still need to feed at night and maybe the baby will need dinner before three months.
Ferber made some modifications in the 2006 edition of his book Solving Your Child's Sleep Problem . She is now more open to sleeping together and feels different approaches working for family, kids & amp; situation.
Criticism
Crying is associated with physiological stress in infants in the short term, and some pediatricians do not recommend techniques such as "controlled crying" and "camping" as a result, based on the possibility of long-term psychological and physical problems. A study that looked at long-term consequences in children older than seven months concluded that there were no beneficial or negative effects. However, there are no data about children younger than seven months. Co-sleeping, a common alternative, has its own benefits but also the risks of not breastfeeding.
Allowing babies to cry without comfort causes an increase in a hormone called cortisol, a stress hormone. The prolonged increase in these hormones inhibits brain and emotional development.

- The Robert De Niro character in the movie Meet the Fockers tried to use the Ferber Method in teaching his grandson.
- In the episode of Modern Family "Up All Night", Cameron and Mitchell are seen trying to stroke their daughter, Lily. In "Catch of the Day" it is mentioned that Haley is also Ferberized.
- In the Bringing Hope Sleep Training episode, Hope's grandfathers try to train him.
- In the episode of Mad About You Conversation, Jamie convinces Paul to go one night with the Ferber method. Through the process, they face moral and psychological consequences. All episodes are done in one shot.
- In the episode of White Collar Taking Stock, Mozzie accused nanny Diana Berrigan, Karen as a Ferberizer.
