DuckDuckGo ( DDG ) is an Internet search engine that emphasizes the privacy protection of searchers and avoids the bubble of search results filters that are personalized. DuckDuckGo distinguishes itself from other search engines by not profiling users and deliberately pointing out to all users the same search results for given search terms, and emphasizing returning the best results, rather than the most results, yielding those results from over 400 individual sources, including crowdsourced sites like Wikipedia, and other search engines like Bing, Yahoo !, and Yandex.

The company is based in Paoli, Pennsylvania, in Greater Philadelphia, and has 40 employees. The name of the company comes from duck game kids, ducks, geese.

Some DuckDuckGo source code is free software hosted on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 License, but the point is proprietary. The company registered the domain name ddg.gg on February 22, 2011 and ddg.co on September 20, 2013 which is used as a shortened URL alias leading to duckduckgo. com .

On September 18, 2014, Apple entered DuckDuckGo in its Safari browser as an optional search engine. On November 10, 2014, Mozilla added DuckDuckGo as a search option to Firefox 33.1. On May 30, 2016, The Tor Project, Inc. made DuckDuckGo the default search engine for Tor Browser 6.0.

History

DuckDuckGo was founded in 2008 by Gabriel Weinberg, an entrepreneur who previously launched the Names Database, a social network that is now dead. Originally self-funded by Weinberg, DuckDuckGo is now ad-supported but users have the option to disable ads. The search engine is written in Perl and runs on nginx, FreeBSD and Linux. DuckDuckGo is built primarily on API searches from various vendors. Therefore, TechCrunch marks the service as a "hybrid" search engine. At the same time, it generates its own content page, and thus is similar to Mahalo, Kosmix and SearchMe. Weinberg explains the start of the name with respect to the duck game of the children, ducks, geese. He said about the origin of the name, "It really only pops into my head one day and I just love it.It is certainly influenced/derived from duck duck geese, but otherwise there is no relationship, for example, metaphor." DuckDuckGo performs in TechCrunch's Elevator Pitch Friday in 2008, and it is a finalist in the BOSS Mashable Challenge 2008.

In July 2010, Weinberg started the DuckDuckGo community website (duck.co) to allow the public to report problems, discuss how to deploy search engine usage, request features, and discuss open source code.

The following month, Union Square Ventures invests in DuckDuckGo. Union Square partner Brad Burnham stated, "We invested in DuckDuckGo because we became convinced that it was not only possible to change the basis of competition in search, it was time to do it." In addition, Trisquel, Linux Mint and Midori web browsers are switching using DuckDuckGo as their default search engine.

In May 2012, search engines attracted 1.5 million searches per day. Weinberg reported that they had received US $ 115,000 in revenue in 2011 and had three employees, plus a small number of contractors. Compete.com estimates 277,512 monthly visitors to the site in August 2012. On April 12, 2011, Alexa reported a 3-month growth rate of 51%. DuckDuckGo's own traffic statistics show that in August 2012 there were 1,393,644 visits per day, up from an average of 39,406 visits per day in April 2010 (earliest available data). In a long profile in November 2012, the Washington Post indicates that searches on DuckDuckGo amounted to 45,000,000 per month in October 2012. The article concludes "Weinberg's ambitious goals made him a very competitor weird and dangerous. He can do almost anything that Google or Bing can not damage their business model, and if the user knows that they like a better DuckDuckGo way, Weinberg can ruin the big boys without actually trying. his supporters at Union Square Ventures say Google is vulnerable. "

GNOME released the Web (web browser) 3.10 on September 26, 2013, and starting with this version, the default search engine is DuckDuckGo.

In its keynote address at WWDC 2014, Apple announced that DuckDuckGo will be included as an option for search on both iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. On March 10, Pale Moon's web browser, starting with version 24.4.0, included DuckDuckGo as its default search engine, and listed it on the browser's homepage. In May 2014, DuckDuckGo released a redesigned version for beta tester via DuckDuckHack. On May 21, 2014, DuckDuckGo officially released a redesigned version that focused on smarter answers and smoother displays. The new version adds many new features like images, local searches, auto suggestions, weather, recipes, and more.

in July 2016, DuckDuckGo officially announced the extension of its partnership with Yahoo! which brings new features to all search engine users, including additional results date filtering and additional sitelinks. It also partners with Bing, Yandex, and Wikipedia to generate results or take advantage of the features offered. The company also confirmed that it does not share user information with partner companies, as it is always the policy.

Overview

DuckDuckGo results are a compilation of "over 400" sources, including Yahoo! Search BOSS; Wikipedia; Wolfram Alpha; Bing; its own web crawler (the DuckDuckBot ); and others. It also uses data from crowdsourced sites, including Wikipedia, to fill in the "Zero-Click Info" boxes - a gray box above the results that display a summary of related topics and topics.

DuckDuckGo positions itself as a search engine that puts privacy first and therefore does not store IP addresses, does not record user information and only uses cookies when needed. Weinberg states "By default, DuckDuckGo does not collect or share personal information, that is our privacy policy in brief." However, they keep a log of all search terms used.

Weinberg has refined the quality of his search engine results by deleting search results for companies he believes as content factories , such as Demand Media's eHow, which publishes 4,000 articles per day produced by paid freelance writers, which Weinberg believes is, "... low quality content designed specifically to rank highly in the Google search index." DuckDuckGo also filters pages with substantial advertising.

Instant Answers

In addition to indexed search results, DuckDuckGo displays relevant results, called Instant Answers, at the top of the search page. These Instant Answers are collected from 3rd party APIs or static data sources such as text files. Instant Answers are called zeroclickinfo because the intent behind this is to provide what users search on the search results page itself so that users do not have to click on any results to find what they are looking for. Since August 20, 2016, there are 989 active Instant Answers.

Instant Answers are open source. They are preserved at Github and anyone can build or work on it.

Tor hidden Service

In August 2010, DuckDuckGo introduced an anonymous search, including an outbound enclave, for search engine traffic using Tor's network and allowing access through Tor's hidden services. This allows anonymity by routing traffic through a series of encrypted relays. Weinberg stated: "I believe this fits perfectly with our privacy policy: Using Tor and DDG, you can now end anonymously with your search, and if you use our encrypted homepage, you can also be encrypted."

Sound search

In 2011, DuckDuckGo introduced voice search for Google Chrome voice search extension users.

bangs

DuckDuckGo includes the keyword "! Bang", which gives the user the ability to search on a particular third-party website - using the site's own search engine if applicable. Starting 2017, approximately. 10,000 "bangs" for various Internet sites are available.

Browser privacy

DuckDuckGo has mobile apps available for iOS and Android that force websites to use HTTPS, block web trackers, and rate sites based on their privacy practices. The service, released in January 2018, is also available as a browser extension for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari.

Business model

DuckDuckGo generates revenue by presenting advertisements from the Yahoo-Bing search alliance network, and through affiliate links with Amazon and eBay.

Reception

In a June 2011 article, Harry McCracken of Time magazine praised DuckDuckGo, comparing it to his favorite hamburger restaurant, In-N-Out Burger:

It feels very much like Google's beginning, with a stripped home page. Just as In-N-Out does not have a latte or an Asian salad or a sunda or scrambled egg, DDG does not try to do news or blogs or books or pictures. No auto-completion or instant results. It only offers core web searches - mostly the most useful "ten blue link" approach, no matter what the critics say... As for the quality, I'm not saying that Weinberg has figured out how to return more relevant results from the search team Google is great. But DuckDuckGo... is great in returning useful sites. Everything feels supple and straightforward and free-fill...

The barebone approach quoted in the quotation has changed; DuckDuckGo now has auto completion and instant results for example. McCracken included the site in the "50" Best Website 2011 "" Time "" list.

Thom Holwerda, reviewing search engines for OSNews, praises its privacy and smart features for site-specific searches and criticizes Google for "tracking [ing] almost everything you do", especially since the risk of such information is subject to calls US government courts. In 2012, in response to allegations that it is a monopoly, Google identifies DuckDuckGo as a competitor. Weinberg was reportedly "delighted and comforted" by the confession.

Traffic

As of June 2013, DuckDuckGo shows that they've seen significant traffic increases; according to Twitter's website account, on Monday 17 June 2013, it has three million direct searches daily. On average during May 2013, it has 1.8 million daily direct searches. Some people attribute this claim to PRISM exposure and the fact that other programs operated by the National Security Agency (NSA) are leaked by Edward Snowden. Danny Sullivan writes in Search Engine Land that despite the growth of search engines "it does not grow anywhere near numbers to reflect substantial or even minor changes important by public searches" for reasons of privacy, and he concludes "No One Cares About "Private" Search ". In response, Caleb Garling of the San Francisco Chronicle argued: "I think this thesis has suffered some key failures in logic" because of increased traffic has occurred and due to the widespread lack of awareness about the existence of DuckDuckGo. Then in September 2013, search engines reached 4 million searches per day.
