Cracked nipples (or nipple trauma ) are conditions that can occur in lactating women as a result of a number of possible causes. Developing cracked nipples can cause pain, dryness or irritation, or bleeding from, one or both nipples during breastfeeding. Mothers with cracked nipples may experience severe nipple pain when the baby is breastfeeding. This severe pain is a disincentive to continue breastfeeding. Cracked nipples are classified as breast disorders. Society and culture
The importance of preventing cracked nipples while breastfeeding has been reported. In an informal survey of breastfeeding in the UK, some mothers reported that they stopped breastfeeding because cracked nipples made her too sick.
