Histori

James Fisher wrote that the first person recorded while feeding wild birds was a 6th-century monk, Saint Serf of Fife who tamed a dove by feeding him. During the harsh winter of 1890-1891 in the British national newspaper, asked people to remove food for birds. In 1910 in England, Punch magazine stated that feeding birds was a "national pastime". Today in the UK, most people feed throughout the year, and enough food is provided to support the calorie requirements of the 10 most common garden bird species. Eating birds has grown into the second most popular hobby in the United States behind gardening. To celebrate a bird feeding hobby, February was given the name National Bird Feeding Month by a congressional decision in 1994.

Activity

Eating birds is usually considered a bird fan activity. People who feed wild birds often try to attract birds to suburban and domestic locations. This requires setting up a place to eat and supplying bird food. Foods may include beans, peanuts, buy food mixtures, fats, kitchen scraps and fat. In addition, bird baths and sand (sand), birds stored in their plants to help grind food as a relief for digestion, can be provided.

Feeding bread for waterfowl in parks, lakes, and rivers is also a popular activity.

Type

Certain foods tend to attract certain birds. Sparrows and siskin will be attracted by Niger, and Jays like corn. Hummingbirds, sunbirds and other necrotora birds love nectar. Seeds mixed and black sunflower seed oil is favored by many species of seed eaters. Birds such as white eyes, chameleons, and some canker sores will pick up fresh fruit and chop. Different feeders can be purchased specifically for different species. Not just small birds who are interested in eating birds. In some urban areas of England, red kites are given pieces of chickens and tables in the garden.

Garden birds can be fed using nuts, seeds, coconut (but never dry coconut) or fat (but not liquid oil at room temperature) using various feeders.

Once the station is established, it takes several weeks for the bird to find and start using it. This is especially true if the feeding station is the first in an area or (in winter areas) if the station is established in the spring when natural food sources abound. Therefore, beginners should not completely fill the feeder at first. Food will be old and destructive if left too long. This is especially true for foods that are not coated, such as thistle and fat. Once the bird begins to pick up the food, the feeder must remain full. In addition, the person feeding the bird should be sure that there is a water source nearby. The bird bath can attract many birds as a place to eat.

In North America you can use a fat called suet to attract a variety of birds that may not be trusted to visit a bird feeder containing seeds. In Texas, all common woodpecker species would use a year-old feeder. In winter, yellow-Rumped and Orange-Crowned warblers, King-crowned Kinglets and North Flickers can appear. In North Oriole spring and other warbler can also visit. The Suet feeder takes a long time to get up, sometimes weeks for the first bird to start using it.

Impact

A study conducted in Sheffield, England, found that the abundance of garden birds increased with the feeding rate of birds. This effect is seen only in species that regularly take additional food, increasing the likelihood that bird feeding has a direct effect on the abundance of birds. In contrast, the density of feeding stations has no effect on the number of different bird species present in the environment.

The use of bird feeders has been claimed to cause environmental problems; some of these are highlighted in front page articles in The Wall Street Journal.

Prior to the publication of the Wall Street Journal article, Canadian Ornithologist Jason Rogers also wrote about environmental issues related to the use of bird feeders in Alberta Naturalist journals. In this article, Rogers explains how the practice of feeding wild birds is inherently full of negative impacts and risks such as fostering dependence, altering natural distribution, density and migration patterns, disrupting ecological processes, leading to malnutrition, facilitating the spread of disease and increasing the risk of dying from cats , pesticides, windows and other causes. In the UK, introducing eastern gray squirrels can consume food in significant volumes intended for birds. An experimental study providing supplementary feed during the breeding season found that the degree of predation by the corvids and the eastern gray squirrel was higher when the nest was located in close proximity to the filled feeder.

In a paper in the journal Oecologia, it was reported that feeding blue breasts and large breasts with peanut cake for long periods of time significantly reduced the size of the parent. This is driven by smaller clutch sizes in both species and lower hatching success rates for blue breasts. Studies by the University of Freiburg and Environmental Canada found that blackcaps migrating to Britain from Germany have adapted to eating food supplied by humans. Instead migrating blackcaps to Spain have customized bills to feed on fruits like olives.

Providing additional food at the eating place can also alter interactions with other species. Aphids and carabid beetles are more likely to be inhabited by birds near bird feeders.

Economy

A large sum of money is spent by passionate bird feeders, who spoil their wild birds with a variety of bird food and bird feeders. More than 55 million Americans over the age of 16 feed wild birds and spend over $ 3 billion a year on bird food, and $ 800 million per year for bird feeders, bird baths, bird houses and other bird feeding accessories. The activity has spawned an industry that sells supplies and equipment for a bird feeding hobby.

In some cities or parts of the city (eg Trafalgar Square in London) feeding forbidden pigeons, either because they compete with native species that are vulnerable, or because they are abundant and cause pollution and/or noise.
