History
Animal Planet was launched on October 1, 1996; it was made by Discovery Communications in collaboration with the British Broadcasting Corporation. On January 1, 1997, the Animal Planet distribution grew as a result of Advance Entertainment Corporation selling WWOR EMI Service's satellite transponder slot (national superstation from Secaucus, New Jersey/New York City's WWOR-TV, implemented after Part 1989 of the Right to Exclusivity Rule Syndication by Federal Communications Commission) to Discovery Communications, replacing feeds with Animal Planet directly.
At the end of 2005, as part of a multi-million dollar expansion, the National Aquarium in Baltimore opened an exhibit called "Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extreme". Animal Planet and the National Aquarium in Baltimore announced a multi-year partnership the previous year, producing an original orientation film that provides a background of Aquarium visitors in the Australian area that inspires new exhibits and special areas within the expansion where visitors can learn about the Animal Planet conservation efforts and other programs. The partnership also allows the possibility of producing future television programs about the National Aquarium in Baltimore research and exhibition.
In 2006, BBC Worldwide sold its 20% stake in the Animal Planet U.S. network. back to Discovery Communications. The BBC retained 50% of its stake in the Planet channel of Europe, Asia and Latin America Animal Planet, as well as minority interests in Animal Planet Japan and Animal Planet Canada until 15 November 2010, when BBC Worldwide sold 50% of shares in Animal Planet and Liv to Discovery Communications for $ 156 million. Animal Planet is also a member of the Association of Caribbean Cable Cooperatives.
During the late 2000s, Genius Products announced a US distribution agreement involving Animal Planet and TLC. Jakks Pacific also signed a licensing agreement to develop a pet product of the Animal Planet brand.
2009 rebranding
On February 3, 2008, in the midst of an average decrease in viewers, Animal Planet underwent major changes in programming and branding. The new formation puts a greater focus on the series that describe animals as "characters" in their own right, and the more "aggressive" and story-based entertainment series targeting adults 25-49 (like Escape to Chimp Eden and the reality documentary series Whale Wars ), as opposed to traditional nature documentaries and family displays. The network also adopted a new logo, replacing the previous "elephant and world" symbols with stylized word marks, and the new slogan "Same Planet, Different World". Network president Marjorie Kaplan explains that Animal Planet has been too "soft" and family-oriented, and that it aims to be "more aggressive and exploit the instinctual nature of its fascinating animal content."
In April 2010, Animal Planet introduced a new marketing campaign, "Surprisingly Human", as an evolution of the 2008 rebranding. The slogan reflects the growing number of personality series based on Animal Planet following animal investigations and work, such as River Monsters .
In April 2012, the entertainment-oriented direction of Animal Planet was criticized after it was broadcast Mermaid: The Body Found - a fictitious documentary showing that mermaids are real. Regardless of its fictitious content, the documentary was widely viewed, and a follow-up titled Mermaids: New Evidence set the rating notes all the time for the channel.

Programming
Recent additions to channels, such as Meerkat Manor and Orangutan Island , reflect a shift toward "programming of predation" and deeper narratives. Animal Planet intends a new direction to help revitalize the stagnant rankings, after the primetime network's broadcast dropped by 9% in 2007. Animal Planet added pseudo-scientific documentary, reality television and sitcom events to the line-up.
Animal Planet is also famous for its annual action program, Puppy Bowl , the annual special event shown during the afternoon ahead of the NFL Super Bowl, mainly made up of playful puppies; the original commentator is the broadcaster of the sport of Kalas.
