Mikhail Varshavski commonly known as Doctor Mike is a Russian American board-certified family medicine doctor, celebrity personality and philanthropist based in New York City. Dr. Mike is currently the most followed doctor on social media with a combined following of over 4 million. He is a family medicine doctor focusing on preventative and osteopathic medicine at Overlook Medical Center.

Varshavski gained media attention in mid-2015 when Buzzfeed published an article about him praising him for his good looks. Subsequently, he became known as the "hottest doctor on Instagram," and was featured in a variety of magazines and newspapers including Cosmopolitan, DailyMail, New York Magazine and Time. His Instagram account amassed to about one million followers by October 2015. His following further increased in November, when People magazine named him the "Sexiest Doctor Alive" in its Sexiest Men Alive issue. As of April 2018, his Instagram account has 2.7+ million followers.

Varshavski has continued to grow in popularity as a leading voice for the medical community appearing on major television programs such as Good Morning America, Today Show, The Doctors, Rachael Ray Show, Mornings with Maria, Inside Edition, and Good Day. He speaks on a wide range of complex and sometimes controversial medical topics, breaking them down into engaging, fun, and easy to understand segments.

Early life and education

Varshavski was born in Russia. His father was a physician and his mother was a mathematics professor. At the age of six, he and his family immigrated to Brooklyn. In Brooklyn, his mother had to work sweeping floors for minimum wage, while his father attended medical school for the second time.

He was given the nickname Doctor Mike during his high school by friends who came to him for sports-related injuries knowing that Varshavski's father is a physician. He graduated from the New York Institute of Technology with a B.S. in Life Sciences and a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine via an accelerated 7-year combined track. During his first year of medical school, his mother died of Leukemia.

Varshavski was accepted into Atlantic Health System Overlook Medical Center's Family Medicine residency program in mid-2014. During his time there he has conducted exercise research with his patients. His "Workout with Your Doctor" study was presented at the 2016 FMEC Regional meeting as well as on The Dr. Oz Show. He went on to complete the residency program with an award for excellence in osteopathic medicine in mid-2017.

Career

Varshavski has made many television and public appearances since 2012; in November 2016 he was the featured chief medical host on the live televised event Stand Up to Cancer U.K. special, during which he coached host Davina McCall in performing a rectal exam. The event raised over $18 million towards cancer research. Varshavski has also appeared on the Dr. Oz Show, Good Morning America, The Doctors, Inside Edition, Fox News, and Telemundo.

Alongside his work at the hospital and on television, Varshavski has also been a guest speaker at several universities, public forums, radio shows, and health/lifestyle conferences. He has spoken at Columbia University, Rutgers University, Brooklyn College and the annual iHeartRadio Lifestyle/Health Expo.

He has written articles in several medical journals and is a contributor to AAFP , Men's Health , NBC News , Livestrong, Women's Health Magazine , Shape magazine, and AskMen. He also wrote a section in Magil's Medical Encyclopedia.

In April 2017, Varshavski launched his YouTube channel targeted at millennials educating them on a wide variety of medical, health, and lifestyle topics. Five months after launch the channel was receiving over one million views monthly and has been recognized by press.

Philanthropy

Varshavski has used his social media fame and work as a medical doctor to establish his own foundation, Limitless Tomorrow, which he launched in late 2015. Through the charity he has raised over $100,000 toward financially supporting deserving students who have demonstrated excellence in and outside of the classroom. Varshavski has utilized his Instagram following to raise money for his foundation in a variety of ways, including teaming up with dating app Coffee Meets Bagel in January 2016 to raffle off a date with himself. Participants made a minimum $10 donation to join the raffle, with one winner getting a date with Varshavski. The raffle raised $91,000 and drew national and international media attention.

Varshavski also participates in various other charity events and philanthropic work; in March 2014, he shaved his head for St. Baldrick's children's cancer organization and in September 2017, for the second consecutive year, he led Team Doctor Mike in the Susan G. Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure as well as opening the race. In the weeks preceding, he promoted the race by producing and starring in a viral video. Dr. Mike has also conducted work in the international health field partnering with Americares, spending 2 weeks in their El Salvador medical hub.

Social Media Fame

In early 2012, Varshavski joined Instagram to document his life going through medical school, through residency, and training to become a doctor. He posted photos of himself in operating room, attending fashion events and spending time with his husky, Roxy. His quest to demystify and improve medicine drew a large audience gaining him over 100,000 followers over the course of three years.

In August, Buzzfeed featured him in an article, calling him the "hottest doctor on Instagram". Subsequently, he was featured in Cosmopolitan, DailyMail, and Business Insider. By October 2015, his account grew to one million followers and People Magazine named him the "sexiest doctor alive" in their sexiest men alive issue in November 2015.

After becoming popular on social media, Varshavski has received a lot of media coverage. He has been featured in Time, Covetuer, Mr Porter, Cosmopolitan, New York Magazine, E Online and Business Insider. He was hailed by the media as the real-life version of the Grey's Anatomy character Derek Shepherd.
